Editor’s Review: doPDF — Free Windows PDF Creator

doPDF is a focused, free PDF printer from Softland that converts any printable Windows document into industry-standard PDF files. Installing as a virtual printer driver, doPDF integrates into the Windows Print dialog and offers Office add-ins for one-click exports. The app emphasizes simplicity, small footprint and reliable output. The current stable release is version 11.9.523 (released 2026-03-31).

Key Features

Print-to-PDF workflow: Convert from any Windows application that supports printing by selecting the doPDF printer — no additional export steps required.

Wide format support: Handles hundreds of printable formats including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PUBX, HTML, TXT and many CAD outputs.

Office add-ins: Add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio and Outlook enable quick exports while preserving hidden hyperlinks and bookmarks.

Output presets and controls: Presets for print-quality or web-optimized PDFs, optional font embedding to preserve layout and typography, and basic size/quality choices.

Lightweight and dependency-free: Compact installer and runtime; does not rely on Ghostscript. Requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 or newer.

Free for personal and business use: No ads in output PDFs; upgrade paths available (doPDF Premium, novaPDF) for password protection, server use and advanced functionality.

Installation & Requirements

Supported OS: Windows desktop and server editions (including Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7 and corresponding Server versions).

Framework: Requires .NET Framework 4.6 or later; the installer will prompt to add it if missing.

Setup: Installs as a virtual printer and adds a conversion wizard accessible from the Start menu for manual use outside of the Print command.

Distribution: Free download from the official site; a commercial novaPDF line offers additional server and enterprise features.

What doPDF Does Well

Reliable PDF generation: Produces standard, compatible PDF files that open in any PDF viewer without rendering surprises.

Speed and low resource use: Fast conversions with minimal CPU and memory impact — suitable for routine office tasks and student use.

Preserves document structure: Embeds fonts when requested and keeps hyperlinks/bookmarks intact when using Office add-ins.

Simple UX: No steep learning curve — users familiar with printing workflows can create PDFs immediately.

Limitations and When to Consider Upgrading

Not an editor: doPDF creates PDFs but does not include advanced editing, redaction, annotation or form-creation tools found in paid suites.

Security features are basic: For strong encryption, granular permissions, digital signatures or enterprise-grade security, novaPDF or other commercial products are better suited.

No native macOS or Linux builds: doPDF targets Windows only; cross-platform users must seek alternatives.

Server and automation: For multi-profile print servers, centralized deployment and advanced batch automation, novaPDF Professional provides server-focused capabilities.

Best Use Cases

Everyday document conversion: Quickly convert letters, reports, spreadsheets and presentations for email, archiving and sharing.

Office integration: One-click PDF exports from Microsoft Office while retaining hyperlinks and bookmarks — useful for corporate documentation and publishing.

Lightweight deployments: Ideal for students, freelancers and small businesses that need a reliable, no-cost PDF printer without bloat.

doPDF is a practical choice when you need fast, dependable PDF creation from any printable Windows application without paying for a full PDF suite. It delivers core conversion features, Office integration and simple quality controls; consider novaPDF or other commercial tools if you require editing, advanced security or server-oriented features.
